Mater Dei Parish was formed in July 2006 by combining the former Assumption and Holy Name Parishes, which both served downtown Topeka with independent churches and schools. Each school was founded by the Sisters of Charity in Leavenworth and had decades of academic success and their own unique traditions.

Through the concentrated efforts of parishioners, parents, and teachers, Mater Dei Catholic School opened in August of 2006 as a brand new school with a legacy that spans more than 150 years.
